Ecosystem Bumi – Protecting Indonesia’s Marine Life

Ecosystem Bumi Foundation is an Indonesian nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting endangered wildlife, restoring fragile ecosystems and empowering local communities to become active guardians of nature.

Based in Bali, the foundation works with conservation organizations, local authorities and communities to protect some of Indonesia’s most threatened aquatic species and habitats.

Protecting Endangered Sea Turtles

On Bangkaru Island, off the coast of Sumatra, Ecosystem Bumi collaborates with Ecosystem Impact and local authorities to protect endangered leatherback and green sea turtles. Ranger teams patrol nesting beaches, monitor turtle populations and safeguard nests from poaching and other threats.

Between July 2024 and March 2025, the programme helped protect more than 1,200 sea turtle nests. Environmental education activities also reached 190 schoolchildren, inspiring the next generation of ocean protectors.

Saving the Mahakam River Dolphins

In Borneo, Ecosystem Bumi supports the protection of the endangered Mahakam River dolphin through a dedicated ranger programme in partnership with Yayasan Konservasi RASI.

Rangers monitor dolphin populations, document threats, inspect fishing gear and respond to emergencies involving trapped or entangled animals. Their work also helps address pollution, habitat degradation and the impacts of river traffic.

Restoring Coral Reefs

In Padang Bai, Bali, the foundation collaborates with Livingseas Foundation to restore damaged coral reefs. The programme uses coral nurseries and innovative Reef Star structures to help regenerate underwater habitats and support marine biodiversity.

Connecting People and Nature

Beyond field conservation, Ecosystem Bumi promotes environmental education, scientific monitoring and community involvement. Its projects demonstrate how partnerships between conservationists and local communities can create lasting benefits for wildlife and the ecosystems on which people depend.

Through donations, wildlife adoptions and conservation partnerships, supporters can help protect endangered species, restore marine habitats and build a healthier future for Indonesia’s extraordinary biodiversity.
