Ocean Sole – Turning Ocean Waste into Art

Ocean Sole is a Kenyan social enterprise supported by a registered nonprofit organization in the United States. Its mission is to protect marine ecosystems, reduce plastic pollution and create sustainable economic opportunities for coastal communities. The organization transforms discarded flip-flops collected from Kenyan beaches and waterways into colorful, hand-carved animal sculptures, turning environmental waste into art with a powerful conservation message.

From Ocean Pollution to Art

Discarded flip-flops are a persistent form of plastic waste along Kenya's coastline. Ocean Sole works with local collectors and skilled artisans to recover this material and give it a second life. At its workshop in Nairobi, artisans clean, assemble and carve the discarded footwear into sculptures representing elephants, giraffes, sea turtles and other animals. Each artwork raises awareness of plastic pollution while providing employment and income for Kenyan communities.

Protecting Sea Turtles and Coastal Habitats

Ocean Sole's conservation work extends beyond recycling. Through its TurtleSafe initiative, the organization supports sea turtle protection in coastal Kenya, including nesting beach monitoring, community engagement and efforts to prevent poaching. The organization also supports beach cleanups and mangrove restoration, helping improve coastal habitats and reduce marine pollution. According to its 2025 impact report, Ocean Sole recycled more than 222,000 discarded flip-flops, removed over five tonnes of marine waste and helped protect more than 300 turtle hatchlings.

Empowering Coastal Communities

Ocean Sole combines environmental protection with economic opportunities. Its community programs support artisans, women-led enterprises and coastal families through employment, skills development and sustainable livelihood initiatives. The Ocean Mamaz program helps women participate in conservation, recycling and community-based economic activities.

Inspiring Change Through Creativity

Ocean Sole demonstrates that environmental action can be creative, practical and economically meaningful. By turning discarded plastic into artwork and reinvesting in local conservation programs, the organization helps protect Kenya's marine ecosystems while empowering the communities that depend on them. Its colorful sculptures carry a simple message around the world: ocean waste can become an opportunity for positive change.
