Founded in 1986 in Italy, the Tethys Research Institute is a nonprofit scientific organization dedicated to the study and conservation of marine wildlife, with a particular focus on whales, dolphins and the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. For four decades, Tethys has combined field research, international conservation advocacy and public participation to improve the protection of marine mammals and their habitats.
Cetacean Sanctuary Research – Protecting Mediterranean Whales
Established in 1990, the Cetacean Sanctuary Research project operates in the Pelagos Sanctuary, a protected marine area in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. Researchers monitor eight species of cetaceans, including fin whales, sperm whales, striped dolphins and other marine mammals. Through visual surveys, photo-identification and scientific data collection, the team investigates population distribution, behaviour, habitat use and threats to marine wildlife. The findings support conservation planning and help improve the scientific understanding of Mediterranean cetacean populations.
Ionian Dolphin Project – Long-Term Conservation in Greece
Operating since 1991, the Ionian Dolphin Project studies dolphins and Mediterranean monk seals in the eastern Ionian Sea. Its research focuses on bottlenose dolphins, endangered common dolphins and monk seals living in coastal ecosystems. By monitoring individual animals and population trends over many years, researchers can identify changes in habitat conditions and provide scientific information for conservation decisions.
Citizen Science – Research at Sea
One of Tethys' distinctive approaches is allowing members of the public to participate directly in marine research expeditions. Participants join experienced marine biologists aboard research vessels in Italy and Greece, helping with observations, data collection and photographic identification. These programmes contribute to research activities while giving participants firsthand experience of marine conservation.
Science Supporting Conservation Policy
Tethys contributes scientific expertise to international conservation initiatives and collaborates with institutions working to protect marine biodiversity. Its research addresses threats such as ship collisions, entanglement in fishing gear, underwater noise, habitat degradation and human disturbance. The institute also conducts research using tracking technologies to better understand marine mammal movements and habitat requirements.
Education and Public Awareness
Beyond its scientific work, Tethys communicates research findings through educational activities, publications and public outreach. Its scientists have contributed to hundreds of scientific publications, creating an extensive body of knowledge about marine mammals in the Mediterranean. By connecting rigorous scientific research with citizen participation and international cooperation, Tethys works to ensure that whales, dolphins and seals can survive in healthier, better-protected seas.
