Ocean Conservation Trust – Restoring Our Ocean

The Ocean Conservation Trust (OCT) is a UK-based marine conservation charity dedicated to protecting and restoring marine ecosystems while inspiring people to take meaningful action for the ocean. Based in Plymouth, the organization combines scientific research, hands-on habitat restoration, public education and community engagement to help create a healthier, more resilient marine environment.

Restoring Seagrass Meadows
One of the Trust's most important conservation programmes is Blue Meadows, an initiative focused on protecting, regenerating and restoring seagrass habitats. Seagrass meadows provide essential nursery grounds for fish, support marine biodiversity, stabilize sediments and store carbon. Yet many of these valuable underwater ecosystems have been damaged or lost through coastal development, pollution and human activities. OCT scientists collect seagrass seeds, cultivate young plants in specialist nursery facilities and develop innovative techniques to restore damaged underwater meadows.

Blue Meadows – Protecting Underwater Habitats
Through the Blue Meadows programme, the Trust works with scientists, coastal communities, harbour authorities and marine businesses to improve the protection of existing seagrass habitats. Projects include seabed mapping, habitat monitoring, restoration planting and the installation of marker buoys to reduce damage from anchoring and boating activities. The programme aims to create long-term solutions that can be expanded to other coastal regions.

Scientific Innovation
Ocean Conservation Trust develops practical restoration methods that make large-scale marine habitat recovery more achievable. Its work includes seagrass cultivation, seed-based restoration and the development of specialized equipment to support underwater planting. Research and monitoring help scientists understand how restored habitats recover and how marine ecosystems respond to conservation measures.

Marine Education and Public Engagement
The Trust believes that lasting ocean conservation depends on people understanding their connection to the sea. Through educational programmes, immersive experiences and community activities, OCT encourages children, young people and adults to learn about marine ecosystems and adopt more ocean-friendly behaviours.

Working Together for Ocean Recovery
OCT collaborates with conservation organizations, researchers, local authorities and coastal communities to develop practical approaches to marine restoration. Its projects demonstrate how scientific expertise, innovative technology and community participation can work together to protect and rebuild vulnerable marine ecosystems. By restoring underwater habitats and inspiring people to care for the ocean, Ocean Conservation Trust is helping create a future in which marine life and coastal communities can thrive.
