Sciaena – Protecting Portugal's Ocean

Sciaena is a Portuguese nonprofit marine conservation organization dedicated to protecting ocean biodiversity, promoting sustainable fisheries and connecting scientific knowledge with environmental action. Based in Faro, in southern Portugal, the organization works with researchers, fishing communities, policymakers and the public to create a healthier and more resilient ocean.

Protecting Marine Ecosystems

Sciaena advocates for the establishment and effective management of Marine Protected Areas in Portuguese waters. The organization has contributed to efforts to protect the remarkable Pedra do Valado reef in the Algarve, one of mainland Portugal's most biodiverse shallow-water rocky reef ecosystems. This marine area supports more than 900 recorded species and demonstrates the importance of involving local communities, scientists and fishing representatives in conservation decisions. Sciaena also advocates for stronger protection of offshore ecosystems, including the ecologically important Gorringe seamount region.

Promoting Sustainable Fisheries

Overfishing and destructive fishing practices threaten marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of coastal communities. Sciaena works to promote fisheries management that respects ecological limits while supporting small-scale fishing communities. Through European partnerships and initiatives such as Fish-X, the organization has explored digital monitoring tools to improve fisheries data and encourage more sustainable management. Its involvement in the Rethink Fisheries initiative supports a transition toward fair, low-impact fishing practices across Europe.

Connecting Science and Society

Sciaena believes that effective ocean conservation requires public participation and accessible scientific knowledge. Its educational and cultural initiatives bring marine conservation closer to local communities. Projects such as Scianema, a film event dedicated to ocean-related topics, and Marmotto, which uses urban art to communicate conservation messages, demonstrate creative ways to engage people in environmental protection. The organization also works with schools, researchers and community groups to raise awareness of marine challenges and practical solutions.

Advocating for Lasting Change

Beyond local projects, Sciaena contributes to national and European environmental policy discussions. It promotes science-based conservation measures, responsible marine resource management and stronger protections for vulnerable ecosystems. By combining research, political advocacy, education and community involvement, Sciaena works toward a future where Portugal's seas remain rich in biodiversity and coastal communities can thrive alongside healthy marine ecosystems.
