A marine protected area needs more than boundaries on a map. It needs people with the skills, equipment and resources to protect what lives within it. WildAid Marine works with governments, nonprofit organizations and coastal communities to strengthen protection for marine wildlife and habitats. Its work supports marine protected areas, coastal fisheries, coral reefs and other important ocean ecosystems.
Building Local Capacity
Through its BLUE PRINT for Marine Protection approach, WildAid helps partners assess local challenges and develop practical Marine Protection Systems. These systems combine surveillance and enforcement, training and mentorship, community engagement, effective policies and consistent funding. Depending on local needs, support can include patrol boats, monitoring equipment, ranger training and cooperation with fishing communities. The aim is to help local teams manage and protect their marine resources independently over the long term.
Protection in Practice
In Palau, WildAid has supported patrol strategies, surveillance equipment and ranger training to strengthen protection of the country’s marine areas. In Tanzania’s Pemba Channel, WildAid works with local partners to support community-led conservation. Providing patrol boats has helped teams monitor waters they previously could only patrol from shore. In the Galápagos Islands, its work has included vessel monitoring, patrol planning and training in cooperation with conservation authorities.
Healthy Oceans, Stronger Communities
WildAid Marine connects practical conservation with the needs of people who rely on the ocean. Strengthening marine protection helps safeguard wildlife while supporting the fisheries and coastal livelihoods that depend on healthy ecosystems.
