El Nido Foundation – Restoring Reefs & Protecting Palawan

Founded in 1994, El Nido Foundation is a Philippine nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the natural environment of El Nido, Palawan, while improving the livelihoods of local communities.Located in one of the world's most spectacular tropical marine environments, the foundation works to preserve coral reefs, mangrove forests and coastal biodiversity through conservation, education and sustainable development.

Restoring Damaged Coral Reefs

One of the foundation's most important initiatives is the Tres Marias Coral Reef Restoration and Education Project. This project focuses on restoring reef areas damaged by destructive fishing practices, including dynamite fishing. Using artificial reef structures and coral restoration techniques, the foundation helps damaged marine ecosystems recover while educating local communities about the importance of healthy coral reefs.

Protecting Mangroves and Marine Habitats

El Nido Foundation supports community-managed marine and mangrove protected areas, helping coastal communities take responsibility for their natural resources. Its conservation programmes have contributed to the establishment of more than 2,600 hectares of protected marine and mangrove habitats. The organization also installs mooring buoys to prevent boats from dropping anchors directly onto sensitive coral reefs, reducing damage from diving and snorkeling tourism.

Promoting Sustainable Tourism

Through the Green Fins programme, El Nido Foundation works with dive operators, snorkeling guides and tourism businesses to encourage environmentally responsible marine tourism. Training and education help reduce harmful practices while allowing local communities to benefit economically from the region's extraordinary biodiversity.

Empowering Coastal Communities

The foundation believes that environmental protection and community development must go hand in hand. Its programmes involve local residents, fishermen, government agencies, researchers and tourism operators in conservation planning, biodiversity monitoring and sustainable livelihood initiatives. By combining reef restoration, mangrove protection and community participation, El Nido Foundation helps safeguard Palawan's remarkable marine ecosystems for future generations.
