Ocean Alive – Reforesting the Sea

Ocean Alive is a Portuguese nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring marine ecosystems by empowering the coastal communities who depend on them. Working primarily in the Sado Estuary, south of Lisbon, Ocean Alive focuses on the conservation of seagrass meadows, vital underwater habitats that support marine biodiversity, sustain local fisheries and help mitigate climate change.

Protecting the Ocean's Underwater Forests

Seagrass meadows are among the most valuable yet threatened marine ecosystems. They provide nursery grounds for fish and shellfish, support the food webs of resident dolphins and store significant amounts of carbon. Ocean Alive works to protect these underwater forests from destructive harvesting practices, anchoring, pollution and habitat degradation. Through scientific mapping, monitoring and ecological restoration, the organization identifies vulnerable habitats and develops practical solutions to safeguard them. Its Guardians of Seagrass Meadows Program engages citizens, businesses and conservation partners in protecting the Sado Estuary's marine forests.

Empowering Women as Keepers of the Sea

One of Ocean Alive's most distinctive initiatives is Keepers of the Sea, a program that places local fisherwomen at the heart of marine conservation. Women from traditional fishing communities receive training to become seagrass monitors, environmental educators and marine guides. By combining their knowledge of the estuary with scientific methods, these women help protect marine habitats while developing additional sources of income. The program demonstrates that environmental conservation and community livelihoods can strengthen one another.

Reducing Marine Litter

Ocean Alive also tackles plastic pollution through its Shellfishing Without Litter campaign. Working directly with shellfish harvesters, volunteers and local communities, the initiative addresses waste left behind by harvesting activities, particularly plastic salt containers used in razor clam fishing. Awareness campaigns and cleanup activities encourage more responsible practices throughout the estuary.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Through marine education programs and Ocean Alive Camp, young people explore coastal ecosystems, discover the importance of seagrass and learn how to participate in conservation. The organization also collaborates with scientists, policymakers and community groups to advocate for stronger protection of blue carbon ecosystems.

A Future Where Communities Protect the Sea

Ocean Alive demonstrates that successful marine restoration begins with people. By connecting scientific research, traditional knowledge, environmental education and women's economic empowerment, the organization is building a model of community-led conservation that can inspire coastal regions far beyond Portugal.
