Ocean Wise – Protecting & Restoring Our Ocean

Ocean Wise is a Canadian nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the world's oceans. Headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, it combines scientific research, environmental education and community action to address some of the greatest threats facing marine ecosystems. Its mission is to inspire and empower people around the world to take meaningful action for a healthier ocean.

Protecting Whales

One of Ocean Wise's key priorities is protecting whales from human-caused threats, including vessel strikes and underwater disturbance.Through its Whale Report Alert System, the organization helps commercial mariners identify areas where whales have been sighted, allowing vessels to take precautions and reduce the risk of collisions.Ocean Wise also supports whale research, citizen science and public awareness initiatives that contribute to safer habitats for marine mammals.

Fighting Ocean Plastic Pollution

Ocean Wise investigates plastic and microplastic pollution through scientific research and works with businesses, governments and communities to reduce plastic waste. Its Shoreline Cleanup programme mobilizes volunteers to remove litter from beaches, rivers and coastal environments while gathering valuable information about pollution sources.

Restoring Marine Ecosystems

Through its Seaforestation programme, Ocean Wise works to restore kelp forests, which provide essential habitats for marine wildlife, support biodiversity and contribute to healthy coastal ecosystems. The organization also promotes sustainable seafood choices to reduce pressure on vulnerable fish populations and encourage responsible fishing practices.

Inspiring Ocean Action

Education is central to Ocean Wise's mission. Its programmes engage young people, educators, researchers, businesses and coastal communities in practical marine conservation.By connecting scientific knowledge with everyday decisions and collaborative action, Ocean Wise demonstrates that protecting the ocean requires participation at every level of society. From safeguarding whales to restoring underwater forests, Ocean Wise is helping create a future in which marine life and coastal communities can thrive together.
