OceanX is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing ocean science, inspiring conservation and building a more sustainable relationship between humanity and the sea. Founded in 2016 by Ray and Mark Dalio as an initiative of Dalio Philanthropies, OceanX brings together scientists, explorers, filmmakers and educators to uncover the mysteries of the ocean and share discoveries with the world.
Exploring the Unknown
At the heart of OceanX's work is the OceanXplorer, one of the world's most advanced privately operated oceanographic research vessels. Equipped with scientific laboratories, deep-diving submersibles, remotely operated vehicles and sophisticated underwater imaging technology, the vessel enables researchers to investigate marine ecosystems that remain largely unexplored. OceanX works with international scientific institutions, local researchers and governments to study marine biodiversity, map underwater habitats and gather data that can inform conservation decisions.
Science for Ocean Protection
OceanX aims to turn scientific discovery into practical solutions. Its research supports marine protected area planning, sustainable fisheries management and a better understanding of vulnerable marine ecosystems. Through collaborative expeditions in regions including the Red Sea, Indonesia, the Seychelles and the waters surrounding Africa, OceanX contributes scientific knowledge that can help governments and communities protect marine resources.
Bringing the Ocean to the World
OceanX believes that exploration becomes even more powerful when discoveries are shared. By combining scientific research with cinematic storytelling, the organization introduces global audiences to the extraordinary life beneath the surface. Its collaborations include the BBC's Blue Planet II and the National Geographic documentary series OceanXplorers, created in collaboration with filmmaker James Cameron.
Inspiring Future Ocean Leaders
Education is another central pillar of OceanX's mission. Through immersive learning experiences, classroom programs and opportunities aboard research vessels, OceanX helps young people and emerging scientists develop the knowledge and skills needed to protect the ocean. By connecting exploration, science, education and storytelling, OceanX works toward a future where healthy marine ecosystems and human communities can thrive together.
