Around the world, coral reefs are dying. Coral reefs provide a significant percentage of the world's fisheries, are a primary 1st protector of coastlines from storm surges, are critical to global fish habitats, provide significant daily sustenance for a billion people, and are an economic contributor of an estimated global $30 billion. While there are many that have the passion for coral restoration, the cost of a land based nursery and lack of technological knowledge can be prohibitive. Without proper facilities and education of both practitioners and the community, coral restoration is left to only large, wealthy institutions.
The Plant a Million Corals (PAMCF) and their Coral Restoration Units (CRUs) can be deployed to any location where corals have been seen to grow. Each CRU is designed to the specific needs of the receiving organization or group and can provide a low cost land based nursery for coral cultivation. These CRUs are accompanied by support from the PAMCF, whether it is continual contact with our staff, led by Dr. David E. Vaughan, founder and pioneer of micro-fragmentation, staff and community training workshops, or troubleshooting on design and outreach. Coral micro-fragmentation and resigning techniques will be utilized, as they have been proven to speed up the coral growth by 25-40 percent as well as promoting early sexual reproduction in corals that have been planted after micro-fragmentation. These CRUs and the accompanying workshops will not only lead to increased micro-fragmentation but empower communities to take an active role in conservation.
