IntelliReefs creates large-scale, biomimicking artificial coral reefs to increase biological and economic resilience, biodiversity, and available habitat, and has developed and proven a series of nanotechnology substrates called “Oceanite” for underwater construction and artificial reef manufacturing for restoration. Each Oceanite mineral matrix can be fine-tuned down to the nanoscale for site, species, and function requirements for a specific location, increasing the likelihood that its use will bring about high-impact results.
Oceanite was developed to mimic the complex composition and structure of natural coral reefs to promote the settlement and recruitment of a coral community rather than a biofouling community. Oceanite enables precise control of pH values, surface chemistry, and textures required for optimum attraction of coral larvae, and rapid growth of coral recruits and small colonies. Unlike other marine restoration substrates, IntelliReefs can be cast in any shape and size, allowing for entire degraded coastlines to be revitalized.
