The Turtle Hospital – Saving Sea Turtles

Founded in 1986 by Richie Moretti, The Turtle Hospital is a nonprofit veterinary hospital in Marathon, Florida, dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing sick and injured sea turtles.

Located in the Florida Keys, the hospital provides specialized medical treatment for sea turtles suffering from boat strikes, fishing gear entanglement, intestinal blockages, infections and fibropapillomatosis, a disease that can cause debilitating tumors.

Its veterinary team performs life-saving surgeries, provides intensive medical care and supports the long-term rehabilitation of injured turtles. Specialized treatment tanks allow patients to recover and regain their strength before being released back into their natural ocean habitat whenever possible.

The hospital also cares for turtles that cannot safely return to the wild, providing permanent sanctuary when necessary.

Beyond animal rescue, The Turtle Hospital is committed to marine conservation through scientific research, environmental education and public awareness. Guided educational tours give visitors a unique opportunity to learn about sea turtle biology, the threats these animals face and the importance of protecting their marine habitats.

The organization also works with researchers, conservation partners and public agencies to improve the protection of sea turtles and their ecosystems.

Through donations, educational visits and community support, The Turtle Hospital continues its mission to give endangered sea turtles a second chance at life.

Rescue. Rehab. Release. Every turtle saved represents another step toward healthier oceans and a safer future for marine wildlife.
