Founded in 1975, The Marine Mammal Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing sick and injured marine mammals while advancing the health of our oceans.
Headquartered in Sausalito, California, the organization operates the world's largest marine mammal hospital. Its dedicated veterinarians, scientists and volunteers provide life-saving care to seals, sea lions, sea otters and other marine mammals suffering from injuries, malnutrition, disease, entanglement and environmental threats.
Along the California coast and in Hawai‘i, rescue teams respond to marine mammals in distress. At specialized rehabilitation facilities, patients receive veterinary treatment and care, with the goal of returning them to their natural ocean habitat whenever possible.
Beyond rescuing individual animals, The Marine Mammal Center conducts scientific research into marine mammal health, ocean pollution, toxic algal blooms and the effects of human activities on marine ecosystems. These findings help scientists better understand the connection between animal, human and ocean health.
Education is another essential part of its mission. Through public programs, school initiatives, volunteer opportunities and professional training, the organization inspires people to become active ocean conservation advocates.
Since its founding, The Marine Mammal Center has rescued more than 26,000 marine mammals, giving thousands of animals a second chance at life.
Through donations, volunteering and partnerships, supporters can help provide food, medical care and rescue equipment for marine mammals in need.
By combining compassionate animal rescue with scientific research and education, The Marine Mammal Center is working toward a healthier ocean for marine mammals and people alike.
