Seal Rescue Ireland – Saving Ireland’s Seals

Seal Rescue Ireland is a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing sick, injured and orphaned seals along the Irish coastline.

Originally established in 2010 as Dingle Wildlife and Seal Sanctuary, the organization relocated to Courtown, County Wexford, in 2014, where it operates Ireland’s only dedicated seal rescue centre.

With a 24-hour rescue hotline and a nationwide network of more than 600 trained volunteers, Seal Rescue Ireland responds to reports of seals in distress along approximately 3,100 kilometres of coastline. Its rescue teams assess vulnerable animals and transport those requiring urgent treatment to the seal hospital.

At the centre, dedicated animal care specialists provide veterinary treatment, feeding and rehabilitation for seal pups affected by injuries, illness, malnutrition, fishing gear entanglement and other threats. As the seals recover, they progress through rehabilitation pools, where they develop the strength, swimming skills and independence needed to survive in the wild.

Once fully recovered, the seals are released back into their natural habitat.

Beyond rescue, Seal Rescue Ireland promotes marine conservation through scientific research, environmental education, beach clean-ups and community engagement. Its educational programmes help people understand the threats facing Ireland’s seals, including plastic pollution, climate change and human disturbance.

In 2024 alone, the organization rescued 169 seals and successfully released 97 back into the wild.

Supporters can contribute through donations, seal pup adoptions, volunteering and conservation partnerships. Every contribution helps provide essential medical care, food and a second chance at life for vulnerable seals.

Through compassionate rescue and long-term ocean conservation, Seal Rescue Ireland is working towards its vision of Healthy Seas, Healthy Seals!
