    Threats to sea turtle survival
  • Subproblem:
Ghost net entanglement, injuries and habitat degradation
  • Consequence:
Biodiversity loss and species extinction, Injury, suffering and death of aquatic wildlife
  • Solution:
Sea turtle rescue, veterinary care, research and education

Founded in 2013 by marine biologist Dr. Martin Stelfox, the Olive Ridley Project is an international charity dedicated to protecting sea turtles and their habitats.

The organization began in the Maldives after discovering numerous olive ridley turtles entangled in abandoned fishing nets, commonly known as ghost gear. What started as an effort to understand and prevent these entanglements has grown into a comprehensive conservation initiative combining animal rescue, veterinary medicine, scientific research and education.

Today, the Olive Ridley Project operates specialized sea turtle medical facilities in the Maldives, where injured and sick turtles receive expert veterinary treatment and rehabilitation. Many patients suffer from severe injuries caused by ghost nets, including damaged flippers and deep wounds. Whenever possible, recovered turtles are released back into the ocean.

Beyond emergency rescue, the organization studies sea turtle populations, investigates threats to their survival and works with local communities, fishers and conservation partners to reduce the impact of marine debris and abandoned fishing gear.

With operational bases in the Maldives, Kenya, Oman, Pakistan and Seychelles, the Olive Ridley Project also promotes environmental education, veterinary training and community-led conservation initiatives.

Through donations, turtle adoptions, volunteering and partnerships, supporters can directly contribute to life-saving veterinary care and the long-term protection of sea turtles.

By combining hands-on rescue with science and education, the Olive Ridley Project is working towards a future where sea turtles can thrive in healthy oceans, free from human-induced threats.
